With a limited team and resources, it was crucial to ask where the company could have the most impact and what will it take to achieve success and sustainability as an organization. Using the model of a future scope, it was imperative to balance thinking tactically with systemic-level evolution in the most efficient way possible to address the immediate pressures and tasks, while maintaining the heart of the non-profit institution with a larger vision at its helm. Framing and Discovery: Cycling through a series of workshops to aggregate data, scenarios, and needs from all organizational stakeholders, the process would go from broad thinking and research to focused analysis. The methods and exercises ranged from data analysis, semiotics, ethnographic research, and scenario mapping or reenactments. The results allowed the staff to audit the current situation and harness information with clear evidence and case studies to see current paths, patterns, and needs from every level and program in the organization. Workshops creating a picture of ideal futures, predictions, and imagined possibilities functioned to gather ideas about risks, areas of uncertainty, and desired outcomes from all the stakeholders. Methods for this stage ranged from financial analysis, polarity maps, trend mapping, to pre-enactments and simulations of alternative futures. Synthesis and Application: Back-casting from the imagined futures to the results from the framing and discovery stage, the team came together to identify actions connecting the desired future with the present possibilities. With the gathered information of all the workshops, the team was able to create new mission, vision, and values statements, develop a new branding, and produce a strategic plan and annual report. This included the structuring of new internal roles and programs and the ability to stop funneling resources to unaligned efforts. The immediate results of the effort were evident at the start of the pandemic, in which the lab has had the internal resilience to adapt and find funding, programs, and opportunities to continue its mission-based work.
